OBITUARY 16th August 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Clydesdale mare Grizelda.

Grizelda  came from Norfolk and was used by a lady who weighed  25 stone and gave demonstrations of Dressage. She then came to Morebattle and became a brood mare. She produced some very good foals, in fact one became a winner of many races, another was a constant prize winner in hunter classes and later sold for £8,000.

Grizelda was small for a Clydesdale had a lovely nature and was much loved. She was in her late thirties, which is an amazing age for a Clydesdale, when sadly her legs gave way and a decision was taken on Tuesday to have her put to sleep. She lived at the Holmes long before the start of the Sanctuary. She took the arrival of hordes of donkeys in her stride and in fact formed a special attachment to a tiny donkey called Jacko who became her close companion.

Two years ago she gained two good friends, Roy and Thelma, who visited her nearly every week to groom and walk her out as well as plying both her and Jacko with lots of treats. Their work with her helped to delay the progression of arthritis, and although eventually it caught up with her, we thank them for helping to make her last couple of years very happy ones.

Grizelda was well known locally and had many admirers, many of whom also knew some of the lovely foals she produced. I am sure that, like us, they will miss seeing her in the field that she occupied for close to 30 years.
