The load has now been lightened! Since the sanctuary was founded in October 2003, Helen has undertaken the work of looking after the donkeys and also carried out the organisation of the sanctuary and the administration of the charity. If extra help was needed, one or more of the volunteers would come in especially for this and of course, at weekends, our loyal volunteers have always been there to show the visitors round, explain the workings of the sanctuary and introduce everyone to our beloved donkeys. In October 2006, she decided to retire from her full time position with a local feed firm to concentrate on the work at the sanctuary. The office was transferred from her home to The Coach House Flat at The Holmes in order to give a proper focal point for visitors. This has been a very popular move. When the sanctuary was founded, we had 4 donkeys in our charge and that number now stands at 45. The Trustees therefore decided that it was time for Helen to be given assistance and we are very pleased to introduce Rosey Bradburn, a qualified veterinary nurse, who now looks after the donkeys and other animals on a daily basis, giving Helen more time to concentrate on the paperwork. Having been a volunteer at the sanctuary since the early days she already knows all the donkeys and their individual foibles well. However, you can’t keep a good ‘un down, and Helen can be found feeding her beloved donkeys at weekends and of course, is always on hand if help is needed to move donkeys from field to field, etc. Rosey says she appreciates having the benefit of Helen’s many years of experience with equines and Helen says she is just downright envious of Rosey’s youth, strength and enthusiasm! Where did hers go? They both look forward to a happy and successful partnership running the sanctuary. |
